stomach knots

We're in southern Mississippi this evening (redundant, I know) for campmeeting and the Pathfinder Fair.  The drive down here was interesting.  We drove across at least five different tornado paths.  I wonder when I will stop getting a knot in my stomach every time we view destruction like that.  The other odd thing is that the trees are starting to be the thing that effects me almost more than anything else.  Particularly in the old neighborhood.

The other night I went on googlemaps to look at what a certain particular house looked like before the storm.  It was on the road, just off our our road, and it's now a pile of rubble, and I simply could not remember what it looked like before.  So I went on googlemaps to look it up.  While I was there, I was reminded of an empty lot in our neighborhood that was completely forested before, now it is barren. So sad.

When I heard that one of the first things the homeowner's wife said was 'oh, MAN, all those trees!' I was a bit frustrated with her - HELLO - what about the HOUSE?  What about the PEOPLE??  But I'm starting to understand.  The houses can be re-built.  (the people are another matter - but thankfully - for us - there was no immediate loss in that area) but the landscape will be permanently changed because of all the trees that are lost.  It is very difficult to see.

Lon and I drove up to the house on Friday afternoon to recover Tommy's pine-wood derby car, to bring to the fair, and we both agreed that we are glad that we don't have to think about re-building there, and driving through all of that every day.  We only live about a mile from that path in the new neighborhood, but we dont' have to drive through it to get anywhere.  For that I am very grateful.
